The Cailleach, the winter goddess, summons the cold months by striking the ground with her staff, stripping the trees bare and freezing the soil. The dark half of the year begins. It is sacred time of rest and regeneration until the land blooms once again.

The Cailleach is said to have dropped stones from her apron, shaping every hill and valley in the landscape we walk today.

Natural wool roving was used to create this earthy piece, using both wet- and dry-felting techniques over a wired armature.

Her hair is adorned with tiny beads, and she carries a natural blackthorn stick as her staff, with a small piece of rough white quartz at its base. A pool of wax beneath her symbolises the icy ground on which she strikes to summon the winter.

I love the idea of her finding a special place in someone's home serving as a daily gentle reminder of the earths resting period.

She stands on a wooden base protected with shellac and measures 5 inches in height (including base)
